Sustainable Communities 2013 - Delivering a sustainable local future

Govtoday and Securing the Future are delighted to be hosting the 5th Annual National Sustainable Communities Conference, ‘Delivering a sustainable local future’, in association with Alliance. The conference will be held on Tuesday 10th December at the Brewery, The City of London.

One year on from the launch of the UK’s first ever heat strategy, the Government laid out on 26th March 2013, the next steps to ensuring affordable, secure, low carbon heating plays an important role in the nation’s energy mix.

The scale of the challenge is huge, with over 80 per cent of heating used in UK homes, businesses and industry produced by burning fossil fuels, and over a third of the UK’s carbon emissions coming from the energy used to produce heat. Factor in to this the fact that Britain tops the fuel poverty table for Western Europe, with some five million UK households, or 19.2 per cent of the total, now affected (according to figures from the Association for the Conservation for Energy and the Energy Bill Revolution campaign), and the importance of change becomes clear.

The Government is committed to driving forward the move to low carbon alternatives in order to cut carbon and help meet renewables targets, and the publication of heat strategy ‘The future of heating: meeting the challenge’ and its follow on action plan have highlighted this drive.

Delivering a sustainable local future will examine the latest policy from Government, question the direction it takes and ask whether this alone will improve the shocking figures on fuel poverty. This national conference will provide the perfect platform for delegates to discuss these measures and how, through collaboration and the uptake of technology and renewable energy systems, local communities can thrive in a low carbon society.
